wood hunt time

Old dead ash tree.

Watersnake: was hanging around in the runoff of a spring where I filled a jug with water. When I poked at him he'd puff up - his whole body would become bigger as if I'd stuck an air hose in him. It startled me too. I've never seen a snake do that before. Tried to take a picture of him puffed up but he unpuffed as soon as I left him alone long enough to take the picture.

northern red-bellied snakes. they're reall pretty. have that rich cadmium red-orange belly. don't see em much unless you go look for them under rocks and logs and stuff. most snakes like that are nocturnal, especially in summer when the days are too hot. I wish i could find some cause I'd catch em and let them loose in my gardens. they like to eat slugs and i have enough of those to comp them an entire summer of vegas style all ya can eat slug buffets in a variety of flowery thematic settings.

next week i can look for it's offspring, or great-grand snakelets.

better work fast. might be getting kinds of cold next week. snakelets might be headed for deep cover for the winter. They hibernate in colonies too - hibernaculas - with many other snakes. So if you find one, you might find a whole bunch of em getting ready for beddy bye.
