Rick Santorum's idea of "indoctrination" in education...

comes with a copy of The Way

Despite Rick Santorum's sanctimonious pothering about "indoctrination" in education - and despite his claims of homeschooling his children - two of his sons attended (or still attend) The Heights School. The Heights is an Opus Dei affiliated Catholic prep school in Potomac Maryland for grades 3-12. Here is a link to a NY Times story about it from January of this year:
NY Times / Jan 12, 2012
POTOMAC, Md. — “Are your jackets on, boys?” Joe Cardenas inspects his charges in a first-period freshman humanities class, sees that they are all appropriately blazered and standing tall, bows his head and begins the morning Hail Mary: “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee ...” Only when they have finished the prayer do they take their jackets off. They sit and open copies of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” the 14th-century English romance.

Mr. Cardenas teaches at the Heights School, a suburban Washington boys’ school affiliated with Opus Dei, the Catholic organization of which he is a member. By the standards of more famous Washington private schools, like Sidwell Friends or Georgetown Preparatory, the Heights is poor, little known and young — it was founded in 1969. But since then it has become the popular school for a small clique of Washingtonians: conservative Catholics.

Although he has made being a home-schooling dad part of his identity, the Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has sent two sons to the Heights. The school, for boys in Grades 3-12, has also educated the sons of the Republican Senators Mel Martinez and Chuck Hagel; former F.B.I. Director Louis J. Freeh; Maggie Gallagher, founder of the National Organization for Marriage; and Kate O’Beirne, an editor at National Review.

The Heights School: Wiki link
The Heights School is a preparatory school for boys in grades 3-12 in Potomac, Maryland, USA. Its mission is to assist parents in the intellectual, spiritual, and physical education of their sons. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. The school's Christian orientation and spiritual formation are entrusted to Opus Dei, a personal prelature of the Catholic Church founded in 1928.

As a side note there is also this:

The Pope of K-Street Catholicizes The Newt - via Wiki:
C. John McCloskey, III is a Catholic priest and member of Opus Dei. He is the former director of the Catholic Information Center of the Archdiocese of Washington. He worked on Wall Street - Citibank and Merrill Lynch - for some years before becoming a priest, being ordained in 1981 by Cardinal Roger Etchegaray.

Fr. McCloskey is perhaps best known for having helped many people convert to Catholicism, including Newt Gingrich...

From Slate dot com - 2002
...McCloskey has become one of the nation's most prominent priestly pundits, espousing his doctrinaire conservatism (in matters of faith, not politics) on Meet the Press, The O'Reilly Factor, Crossfire, NPR's All Things Considered, and Tim Russert's hourlong CNBC show. He chats on television with Greta Van Susteren, Paula Zahn, and Tony Snow and is quoted by USA Today, the Washington Post, and the New York Times. Like all good advocates, he's relentlessly on-message: The Catholic Church, he says, will be revitalized by a traditionalist return to its roots, not through liberalization.

It's a two-pronged strategy: Bring in conservative evangelical Protestants like Brownback while at the same time casting out liberal Catholics of all stripes. McCloskey is the anti-Garry Wills, telling American Catholics who dissent from some church teachings why you aren't a Catholic. "A liberal Catholic is oxymoronic," he says. "The definition of a person who disagrees with what the Catholic Church is teaching is called a Protestant." The Catholic Information Center, which McCloskey calls D.C.'s "downtown center of evangelization" for Catholicism, features a chapel and a bookstore that promotes McCloskey's views. Displayed prominently in the window at 1501 K St. is Goodbye, Good Men: How Liberals Brought Corruption Into the Catholic Church, Michael S. Rose's controversial book on homosexuality in Catholic seminaries.

McCloskey is a native Washingtonian, an Ivy Leaguer who graduated from Columbia and a former Wall Streeter who worked at Citibank and Merrill Lynch. As a result, he travels comfortably in elite circles, and his ministry is focused on them: on young priests and seminarians (the intellectual elite in many Catholic communities), on college students at elite universities and "strong countercultural" Catholic institutions, and on "opinion-makers and people of influence." The self-described supply-sider has a top-down strategy to transform the culture, too. He wants to turn Blue America into Red. As McCloskey wrote in an essay last year for Catholic World Report, "[I]n the first several centuries of Christianity the Gospel was most successfully preached not to the poor and the outcasts, but rather to the prosperous middle classes and educated upper classes in the cities."

That focus on elites is a hallmark of Opus Dei, the conservative Catholic society to which McCloskey belongs. [...]

Paul-Romney Besties Cult Blooms Among The Thorns

Spring is the season for love and it looks like Spring may have sprung early on the GOP campaign bunny trail.

At least according to fruitful wingnut radio putto Rush Limbaugh:

Thursday, 23 Feb 2012
Rush Limbaugh predicted a “meeting of the minds” between Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Ron Paul back in January but kept it to himself. Now that there is considerable speculation it might be a reality, he says he regrets his silence. [www.newsmax.com/Politics/romney-paul-limbaugh/2012/02/23/id/430371]

Love Sprouts Eternal

A vision of beauty, a man of the Right,
He enchanted his eyes, his beautiful She-Wolf
Shy in heart, still alone in the lands
Wishing he was in his hands,
He whispered delightfully, 'Love springs eternal...'
A visage of liberty, a master of the shark,
He fascinated his eyes, his furry Lord-Wolf
Sad in spirit, still alone in the lands
Wishing the media made less demands,
He growled fiercely, 'Love springs eternal...'
A challengers love, minds meet and hold,
He enchanted him, he fascinated him,
Shyness and sadness, no longer alone in the campaign-lands.
Bound together with shared demands,
Felt by both, 'Love springs eternal.' A right-to-life of bliss, policies entwined,
Ambition that is pure in spirit and PAC contributions.
Runningmates forever, happiness found in the crevasses.
Touched by straight tender hands,
Love springs eternal.

(apologies to Anthony Halat)

Strategery: Mapmaker Mitt charts a new route to the sea

Syria is Iran's "route to the sea". According to Mitt Romney:
FORMER GOV. MITT ROMNEY, R-MASS., PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I agree with both these gentlemen. It's very interesting that you're seeing, on the Republican platform, a very strong commitment to say we're going to say no to Iran. It's unacceptable for Iran to have a nuclear weapon.

And -- and Rick is absolutely right. Syria is their key ally. It's their only ally in the Arab world. It is also their route to the sea. Syria provides a -- a shadow over Lebanon. Syria is providing the armament of Hezbollah in Lebanon that, of course, threatens Israel, our friend and ally. [Debate transcript via the Weekly Standard]

Apparently the road to the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea is closed. Or maybe Mitt thinks Persian Gulf is something Muslims like to do on weekends. (there's a PGA joke laying around here somewhere)

Rick Santorum's little handbook of Tradition, Family and Property

What's Rick Santorum talking about when he says things like this:
Rick Santorum warned that President Obama's attacks on faith could lead to a situation similar to the French Revolution.

Speaking at a campaign event in Texas on Wednesday night, the former Pennsylvania said that Obama was "crushing" faith in America.

"They are taking faith and crushing it. Why? Why? When you marginalize faith in America, when you remove the pillar of God given rights then what’s left?" Santorum said according to radio station WLS.

"The French Revolution," Santorum continued. "What’s left is a government that gives you rights. What’s left are no unalienable rights. What’s left is a government that will tell you who you are, what you’ll do and when you’ll do it. What’s left in France became the guillotine. [The Hill - Feb 9, 2012]

Or when he prattles on about "mainstream protestantism" being in "shambles" and "gone from the world of Christianity." Or evokes Satanic plots against America (bold emphasis mine):
"Satan has his sights on the United States of America!"

"Satan is attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that has so deeply rooted in the American tradition." - [Rick Santorum addressing students at Ave Maria University in 2008]

And there's this: from Revolution and Counter-Revolution by Plinio Correa de Oliveira (blod emphasis mine):
This terrible enemy has a name: It is called the Revolution.

Its profound cause is an explosion of pride and sensuality that has inspired, not one system, but, rather, a whole chain of ideological systems. Their wide acceptance gave rise to the three great revolutions in the history of the West: the Pseudo-Reformation, the French Revolution, and Communism.

Sound familiar?

During a 2002 event in Rome, Italy - celebrating Opus Dei founder Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer - Santorum told the National Catholic Reporter that John F. Kennedy's 1960 committment to church and state separation had harmed America:
He told NCR that a distinction between private religious conviction and public responsibility, enshrined in John Kennedy’s famous speech in 1960 saying he would not take orders from the Catholic church if elected president, has caused “much harm in America.”

Why does Rick Santorum say these kinds of things?

I'll tell you why. Because he is transmitting the ideological worldview of a guy named Plinio Correa de Oliveira. Who, in 1959, authored a manifesto called Revolution and Counter-Revolution. Oliveira is Rick Santorum's Saul Alinsky. Revolution and Counter-Revolution is Rick Santorum's Rules for Radicals.

Short Wiki entry on Oliveira HERE

You can read Revolution and Counter-Revolution at:
www.intratext.com/IXT/ENG0038/

Understand that the "Revolution" (the "enemy") that Oliveira describes consists of the Protestant Reformation, the French Revolution, Communism and liberalism in general (liturgical, cultural and socio-economic). The "Counter-Revolution" (the good guys) is traditional Catholicism and the Church.

From Revolution and Counter-Revolution Introduction:
As we write these words, our thoughts transcend the frontiers of Brazil, to our dear sister nations of Hispanic America, and thence to all Catholic nations. In each, this same evil exerts its undefined but overwhelming sway, producing symptoms of tragic grandeur. Consider this example among others. In a letter written in 1956 regarding the National Day of Thanksgiving, Msgr. Angelo Dell'Acqua, substitute for the Vatican secretary of state, said to Carlos Carmelo Cardinal de Vasconcellos Motta of Sao Paulo: "Because of the religious agnosticism of the states," there has been "a decline or almost loss of the sense of the Church in modern society." Now what enemy struck this terrible blow against the Bride of Christ? What is the common cause of this and so many other concomitant and like evils? What shall we call it? What are the means by which it acts? What is the secret of its victory? How can we combat it successfully?

Obviously, it would be difficult to find a more timely subject.

Pride leads to hatred of all superiority and, thus, to the affirmation that inequality is an evil in itself at all levels, principally at the metaphysical and religious ones. This is the egalitarian aspect of the Revolution.

Sensuality, per se, tends to sweep aside all barriers. It does not accept restraints and leads to revolt against all authority and law, divine or human, ecclesiastical or civil. This is the liberal aspect of the Revolution.

Both aspects, which in the final analysis have a metaphysical character, seem contradictory on many occasions. But they are reconciled in the Marxist utopia of an anarchic paradise where a highly evolved mankind, "emancipated" from religion, would live in utmost order without political authority in total freedom. This, however, would not give rise to any inequality.

The Pseudo-Reformation was a first revolution. It implanted, in varying degrees, the spirit of doubt, religious liberalism, and ecclesiastical egalitarianism in the different sects it produced.

The French Revolution came next. It was the triumph of egalitarianism in two fields: the religious field in the form of atheism, speciously labeled as secularism; and the political field through the false maxim that all inequality is an injustice, all authority a danger, and freedom the supreme good.

Communism is the transposition of these maxims to the socioeconomic field.

These three revolutions are episodes of one single Revolution, within which socialism, liturgicism, the politique de la main tendue (policy of the extended hand), and the like are only transitional stages or attenuated manifestations.

That, in a wingnut shell, is the foundation for Santorum's recent pronouncements. And, as well, the inspiration for an organization called the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property, or TFP.

TFP is a Catholic traditionalist special interest/political pressure group with headquarters in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania (near York, PA).

From the TFP's "who we are" webpage - tfp.org (bold emphasis mine):
The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) is an organization of lay Catholic Americans concerned about the moral crisis shaking the remnants of Christian civilization. Its origins date back to January 1971, when the first TFP members started to group around the publication Crusade for a Christian Civilization. Today, with over 120,000 active members, volunteers and donors, the TFP is on the front lines of the Culture War, peacefully defending the values of tradition, family and private ownership.

Central to the TFP mission is the idea that the various crises threatening American society and the Church cannot be seen as separate and disjointed. Rather they originate from a single cause.

The TFP handbook Revolution and Counter-Revolution by Plinio Correa de Oliveira masterfully traces the historical and philosophical roots of this single cause: a phenomenon called the Revolution.

Under the patronage of St. Michael the Archangel

Most Rev. Daniel Jenky, bishop of Peoria, Ill., took the excellent initiative of ordering the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel composed by Pope Leo XIII to be recited during all Sunday Masses celebrated in his diocese. He has asked all his priests to announce as the prayer intention “for the freedom of the Catholic Church in America.”

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

“It is God’s invincible Archangel who commands the heavenly host, and it is the enemies of God who will ultimately be defeated,” the bishop said in a January 24 letter to the Catholics of his diocese.

Bishop Jenky’s request inspires us to place this campaign to abolish “Obamacare” under the patronage of the glorious Archangel and we encourage all Americans to recite the prayer daily.

We also ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception and Patroness of the United States, to intercede for us in this great struggle.

NAZI SEX POLICE!

Drop the smutty magazines and come out of the closet with your dirty condoms over your head, dummkopf!

Above photo: Nazi organized student protest march outside the Institute for Sexual Science, Berlin Germany, May 1933

~::~::~::~::~::~

EXCERPTS:
The Coming of the Third Reich
by Richard Evans

[Chapter: The Failure of Democracy / page 127-128]
After 1918, women were enfranchised and able to vote and stand for election at every level from local councils up to the Reichstag. They were formally given the right to enter the major professions, and the part they played in public life was far more prominent than it had been before the war. Correspondingly, the hostility of those male supremacists who believed that women's place was in the home now won a much wider hearing. Their disapproval was reinforced by the far more open display of sexuality than before the war in the liberated atmosphere of the big cities. Even more shocking to conservatives was the public campaigning for gay rights by individuals such as Magnus Hirschfeld, founder of the harmless-sounding Scientific-Humanities Committee, in 1897. In fact, Hirschfeld was openly homosexual, and in numerous publications propagated the controversial idea that homosexuals were a 'third sex' whose orientation was the product of congenital rather than environmental factors. His Committee was dedicated to the abolition of Paragraph 175 of the Reich Criminal Code, which outlawed 'indecent activity' between adult males. What aroused the wrath of conservatives was the fact that in 1919 the Social Democratic state government of Prussia gave Hirschfeld a large grant to convert his informal Committee into a state-funded Institute for Sexual Science, with its premises in the grand Tiergarten district in the centre of the capital city. The Institute offered sex counseling, held popular question-and-answer sessions on topics like 'what is the best way to have sex without making a baby?' and campaigned for the reform of all the laws regulating sexual behaviour. Hirschfeld quickly built up a wide range of international contacts, organized in the World League for Sexual Reform, of which his Institute was the effective headquarters in the 1920's. He was the driving force behind the spread of public and private birth control and sex counselling clinics in the Weimar Republic. Not surprisingly, he was repeatedly villified by the Nationalists and the Nazis, whose attempt to tighten up the law still further, with the support of the Centre Party, was narrowly defeated by the votes of the Communists, Social Democrats and Democrats on the Criminal Law Reform Committee of the Reichstag in 1929.

Centre Party or Zentrumspartei was a German Catholic political party active during the Weimar Republic. Dissolved as a result of the ratification of the July 1933 Reichskonkordat (Concordat, agreement between the Holy See and Nazi Germany) which granted the Catholic Church certain privileges, but also curtailed political activity (including a ban on political parties) by the Church. (Re-established 1945) see Wiki entry for additional details.

[Page 128-129]
Nationalist hostility was driven by more than crude moral conservatism. Germany had lost 2 million men in the war, and yet the birth rate was still in rapid decline. Between 1900 and 1925, live births per thousand married women under the age of 45 fell very sharply indeed, from 280 to 146. Laws restricting the sale of condoms were eased in 1927, and by the early 1930's there were more than 1,600 vending machines in public places, with one Berlin firm alone producing 25 million condoms a year. Sex counselling centres were opened, offering contraceptive advice, and many of these, like Hirschfeld's Institute, were funded or in some cases actually operated by the Prussian and other regional governments, to the outrage of moral conservatives. Abortion was far more controversial, not least because of the serious medical risks it entailed, but here, too, the law was relaxed, and the offence reduced in 1927 from a felony to a [page 129] misdemeanour. The thundering denunciation of birth control by the Papal Encyclical Casti Connubii in December 1930 added fuel to the flames, and in 1931 some 1,500 rallies and demonstrations were held in a massive Communist campaign against the evils of backstreet abortions.

[Chapter: Bringing Germany Into Line / page 375-376]
On the morning of 6 May 1933, a group of vans pulled up outside Dr Magnus Hirschfeld's Institute for Sexual Science in the smart Tiergarten district of Berlin. Out of them leapt students from the Berlin School for Physical Education, members of the National Socialist German Students' League. They drew up in military formation, then, while some of them took out their trumpets and tubas and started to play patriotic music, the others marched into the building. Their intentions were clearly unfriendly. Hirschfeld's Institute was well known in Berlin, not only for its championing of causes such as legalization of homosexuality and abortion, and for its popular evening classes in sexual education, but also for its comprehensive collection of books and manuscripts on sexual topics, built up by the director since before the turn of the century. By 1933 it housed between 12,000 and 20,000 books - estimates vary - and an even larger collection of photographs on sexual subjects. The Nazi students who stormed into the Institute on 6 May 1933 proceeded to pour red ink over books and manuscripts, played football with framed photographs, leaving the floor covered in shards of broken glass, and ransacked the cupboards and drawers, throwing their contents onto the floor. Four days later, more vans arrived, this time with stormtroopers carrying baskets, into which they piled as many books and manuscripts as they could and took them out onto the Opera Square. Here they stacked them up in a gigatic heap and set light to them. About 10,000 books are said to have been consumed in the conflagration. As the fire burned into the evening, the students carried a bust of the Institute's director into the Square and threw it into the flames. Told that the [page 376] 65 year old Hirschfeld was abroad recovering from an illness, the stormtroopers said: 'The hopefully he'll snuff it without us; then we won't need to string him up or beat him to death.'

(Noted curio: Dood wearing sweater vest in photo above. Just sayin')

[Page 376] (bold emphasis in paragraph is mine)
Wisely, Hirschfeld did not return to Germany. While the Nazi press reported triumphantly on the 'Energetic Action against a Poison Shop' and announced that 'German students fumigate the Sexual Science Institute' run by 'the Jew Magnus Hirschfeld', the venerable sex reformer and champion of homosexual rights remained in France, where he died suddenly on his sixty-seventh birthday, on 14 May 1935. The destruction of his Institute was only one part, if the most spectacular of a far more wide-ranging assault on what the Nazis portrayed as the Jewish movement to subvert the German family. Sex and procreation were to be indissolubly linked, at least for the racially approved. The Nazis moved with the approval of conservatives and Catholics alike to destroy every branch of Weimar Germany's lively and intricately interconnected congeries of pressure-groups for sexual freedom, the reform of of the abortion law, the decriminalization of homosexuality, the public dispensing of contraceptive advice and anything else that they thought was contributing to the continued decline of the German birth rate. Sex reformers like like the Freudian Wilhelm Reich or the long-time campaigner for abortion reform Helene Stocker were forced into exile, their organizations and clinics closed down or taken over by the Nazis.

[Page 377] (bold emphasis in paragraph is mine)
On 1 March 1933 a new decree on health insurance had legitimated closure of state-funded health advice clinics across the land, enforced during the following weeks by gangs of brownshirts. Doctors and staff were thrown out onto the streets; many, particularly if they were Jewish, went into exile. The Nazis argued that the entire system of social medicine developed by the Weimar state was geared towards preventing the reproduction of the strong on the one hand, and shoring up the families of the weak on the other.

Now, does any of that sound like something President Obama would approve? How about an unhinged potty stool croaker like Andrew Breitbart or some sweater vest falangist scrubby-dub wearing a Rick Santorum for President armband? Randall Terry says he's running for the Dem nomination against Obama. How come the Catholic Bishops or a yammering air-head like Sean Hannity haven't clamoured aboard the Randall Terry for President incubator? At least for a photo op. How can the Right Wing Uteri Police in the RNC remain silent as the DNC aborts Randall Terry's presidential bid in it's prenatal womb?! What would Neal Horsley do?!!!!!!!!!

Or this this screeching nut:
Appearing on a webcast hosted by the conservative Family Research Council, Walker Nickless, the Bishop of Diocese of Sioux City, Iowa, warned the Obama administration’s new contraception policy is the work of “the devil,” who “wants to silence the [Catholic] Church’s voice.” During the interview, first flagged by Right Wing Watch, Nickless said, “The power of evil, the devil, is certainly looking everywhere where the power of evil can make a difference.” “And that’s why we’ve got to stand up and violently oppose this,” he added, “we cannot let darkness overshadow us.”

Given all the recent sturm und drang over access to contraceptives and reproductive health care - coming (excuse the pun) from excitable right wing media dickheads and pols as well as elitist Catholic clerical bureaucrats who want to stand between you and your health care needs in the name of religious liberty - I don't think it's too much to ask that any further comparisons to the actions of Nazis also includes a mention of the May 1933 raid on the Institute of Sexual Science in Berlin Germany.

The Catholic Church in Germany may have had its differences with the Nazis on a variety of issues (mainly preserving the religious autonomy of the Catholic Church) but gay rights and access to birth control and information on sexual and reproductive freedom wasn't (at least as far as the Catholic Church was concerned) included in that pastoral calling. Certainly not in the Spring of 1933.

37 Woodchucks Can't Be Wrong

Winter/Spring 2012 - Our Nation's Leading Woodchucks Reach A Decision

27 Woodchucks predict an early Spring (including Shubenacadie Sam of Novia Scotia).

10 Woodchucks (including Pencil Vannia's Punxsutawney Phil) predict 6 more weeks of Winter.

Technically Phil and the other 9 pessimistic woodchucks are correct. The first day of Spring this year is on March 20th. Which is over six weeks away, despite the temperature on the back porch. On the other hand, the other 27 rodents are also correct since Spring will arrive on the 20th of March this year (a day earlier) as opposed to the 21st of March as it sometimes decides to do in other years.

For the woodchucks, it's a heads we win tails you loose wager. You can't beat the woodchucks on this one. Even if you're buried in three feet of snow on March 25th.

Real woodchucks - the kind that don't live in fancy five star heated burrows who are woken up every February 2nd to entertain morons on behalf of the local Chamber of Commerce or some photographer working for a shitty Gannett newspaper - sleep right through the whole groundhog day bullshit until sometime in March or April when they wake up, take a pee, eat some grass, and run around trying to get laid. Because (despite the efforts of the local Chamber of Commerce and the Rick Perry GOP presidential nomination campaign) God hasn't come up with anything better for them to do in a very long time. We should all be so lucky.

Photo above: from my summer of 2010 documentary Woodchucks in the Midst - the summer i decided to go and live among the woodchucks (not the first or last time either) - a "real" woodchuck (aka: groundhog) sneaking around in the bush. Probably looking to score some zucchini blossoms. We should all be so lucky.

The identities of several major donors to Restore Our Future, the “super PAC” backing Mitt Romney, remain hidden from public view, even after their recent filing with the Federal Election Commission, because their contributions were made through limited liability companies or other entities that seem to exist solely on paper. The issue was highlighted in a front-page article in The New York Times on Wednesday.

One of the mystery donors to the pro-Romney super PAC, contributing $250,000 in late July, was identified only as “Paumanok Partners L.L.C.” in the most recent campaign finance reports, which were filed late Tuesday night. The report listed just a post office box for Paumanok in New Canaan, Conn.
