SBL Nature Trail

Pileated Woodpeckers. In the last picture they were both checking out a Bradford Pear tree as a place to perform their springtime tree dance. Both these birds are females (males have a red forehead which extends from crest to beak as well as a red "moustache" at the base of the beak under the eye.)

From 2009: old pictures I took of the girls performing the tree dance are HERE

Unfortunately, this time, when they jumped up on the tree to do their slutty tree dance I moved to get a better view and apparently scared them off and they flew away into the woods. I'm not sure why they do the tree dance. Some kind of secret pileated woodpecker girls gone wild fertility ritual I suppose. Or something. Whatever it is I'm pretty sure Rick Santorum would'nt like any of it.

Romney romps in PR primary. Locals didn't appreciate Santorum telling them to speak less Spanish and more English.

MIKE! you mean PRERTO ricans like to speak in their native tongue instead of american?
why does puerto rico hate america?

we had 2 puerto ricans at my small studio shop. both spoke english well.

I can't wait for Santorum to tell the cajuns in Lousiana that they'll need to stop speaking French if they want to be Americans.

I believe it was Tony Stewart commenting on the southern accents he got used to when his NASCAR experience began.

Except for Ward Burton; "he speaks Ward".

And Santorum?

Oh, pass another fetus round the breakfast nook,

it's been 3 long years, give Obama the hook,

this war upon religion reminds me of the guillotine, so-

run to my bus! no one else to trust! put your faith in meeeeeeeeee!

(sorry Tony Orlando)

we got about 2" of rain with the storm mass that hit the plains. should be headed your way. we needed it too, but boy was that rhubarb juicy.

the farmer said...

i hope some of it makes it this way this time. rhubarb not ready to cut here. some water would go a long way to help it along. the frogs are up and singing. fisrt i've head them this year. one week till i sow the pepper plants. the official beginning of the growing season is when i start the peppers.

we got another 2 inches or so. we haven't had a lot of rain either for the last few weeks and you'd be surprised. better check the rhubarb, mine was short but thick or just a ton of stalks and a bunch of seed pods i had to cut off.
