After five nearly perfect months, May has been rainy and humid. Lots of flooding. Mangos all over the place. Used to love them, now starting to hate them. Can't get rid of them fast enough so both places, in Mayaguez and Rincon, are ssmelling like distilleries.

pjk said...

Mike- distillery being the operative word.

You gotta be able to turn those things into some kind of alcohol-based product.

The Serbs like their Slivo; if you got a flat in Russia with a bathtub, 50% says you use it to brew something in.

Or are you sayin' everyone else around you is already doing just that?

pansy, farmer, here's to no friggin' tornados over our heads this year. And no atmospheric versions of a big swirly in the pr region fer mike. Amen.

pansypoo said...

MIKE. tropical zucchinis?

the rhubarb had more seed pods to remove. the weatherman threatened us w/ 70's in the near future.

I've never experienced a tornado in all my years in pr and pa. Not that I'm complaining.

the farmer said...

I miss the avacado and key lime trees.

could be a lively hurricane season. i think they are predicting one anyway. if its anything like this year so far...

It always amazes me how many of the homes destroyed by tornados don't have basements. You'd think that in areas that are so prone to these storms it would maybe be mandatory (at least wise) to build with at least basement or better yet some kind of concrete storm shelter under or next to the house.

pansypoo said...

bad soil. tho many have storm shelters. yeah. no basement???

still no peas. sigh. honey tho.

Well, they don't have a problem with frost heave down south so I get how that explains the no basements. But they have tornado heave. I just noticed that some of the TV reporters mentioned that most of the houses didn't have basements (or storm shelters either i presume) and therefore people had to hide in small spaces like bathrooms. Plus, you can see the slabs left behind where the houses once stood. Dunno how many have actual storm shelters but i'd bet it ain't that many (or not as many as it might better be).

no peas
poke some more seeds down. can't hurt to try.

no, at the farmer's market. just plants. i think i used up my seeds. i could check. no bean strouts yet. need so warm think. i hear somebody said 70's.

the soil maybe is unstable? too loose?

pansypoo said...

WARM! IT'S WARM! OMG!!!

Happy hurricane season, SBLers. We're overdue for a hit down here.

Then there's always that possibility of an earthquake. We experienced a pretty solid tremor last week. One of these days . . .

pansypoo said...

MIKE. earthquakes???

50's to 80 is NOT RIGHT!

pansypoo said...

all of a sudden flax blossoms.

pansypoo said...

and the moss has tons of little flowers. columbines.

the farmer said...

peppers and tomatoes get planted tomorrow (later today). frost advisory the last couple days backed me down eventhough it never materialized. Sweet corn goes in on Monday. then the zooks cukes beanseeds squash etc to follow.

the farmer said...

i've been trying to get blue flax to grow for a few years but it just doesn't seem to want to take. dunno why.

pansypoo said...

we had a one before that pettered out. now it's in a south west corner. lots of sun next to a spreading lavender.

pansypoo said...

it gets a lot of sun.

pansy, ya said it already, but now it's REALLY friggin' hot!

Benevolent Uncle Tightass (my employer) made a beeline to "those responsible" for turning on the AC at work the moment he got in (in the shop; the office being on is a necessity, mind you).

First on the bitch list was the garage doors being open till noon Monday; it was NICE at noon Monday!

Then he said "if it's too hot for them, they can just go home".

It was 101 when I drove past the MegaChurch thermometer on the way in. I had it in my mind that if the doors were open, it was U-Turn + Wave time, because the place is a glorified pole barn.

The goat kids ain't gonna like when it drops from 95 to 50 later this week either, I'll bet. We've had to deal with some temp swing illnesses this last month already, but a regimen of antibiotics seems to have helped.

More than non-treatment helped one of the doe kids popped by a sleepover date for one of our bucks; that one went hooves up last week.

Probably makes that girl's parents wish she chose a different hobby.

1 more day of school for this year, and HS graduation on Saturday for our eldest. Yay?

pansypoo said...

this weather is just NOT RIGHT!!! but we never had AC at work. and i was working with a soldering iron and/or the grinder. glass dust on my sweaty arms, but funny that it bothered a dude more. but we had big open windows and fans. one year we also worked til late dec with no heat. getting my shirt wet was good AC.

Obama was on the island yesterday. Carmen and I were going to attendhis $36,000.00 a plate dinner but we just weren't hungry enough. He still managed to leave with a cool million for his campaign.

pansypoo said...

MIKE! ha. i just thought of you before i scrolled down. O being in PR.

how do puerto ricans do their rubber chicken?

mike in pr said...

Rubber chicken? Their arroz con pollo (yellow rice with chicken) and pollo asado (roasted chicken)
are pretty good. Their roasted chicken is highhly seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic and oregano.

mike in pr said...

But it's their lechon asado (roast pig) that is really, really good.

pansypoo said...

oooh, roast pig. i bet the food was good.

mike in pr said...

i'm talking about pr food in general. i don't know about the $36,000 a plate meal, but i should think it was pretty good too.

pansypoo said...

PR ain't des moines.

i guess i can't get any warm from PR. jeez. i suppose i can't complain. no flooding of the nuke plant here.

We-All must be busy lately. I know fo sho I is.

Eldest daughter graduated High School, mo-in-law skating on thin ice re; sanity, lawn vac shredded off the impeller blade and took the end of the crankshaft with it, etc.

And now WI joins everyone but the flatlanders to our south with concealed carry. Great. Expect getting pulled over for speeding to get a lot more interesting from here on out.

We had chicken 3 days in a row last weekend for economic reasons. Limit one? Sure! I'll just hit the self-checkout and make separate purchases!

Sirloin on sale for $2.99 vs. the .99 chicken, but we needed a case of pool shock to nip the greening in the bud.

They do a lot with genetics these days; can't they engineer a goat that doesn't need to eat quite so much grain?

Damn!

pansypoo said...

is there any veggie yet???? stoopid global warming. i mke meals to last 2-3 days. menus are hard enough!

the farmer said...

Too busy. Too many wine coolers and .79 chicken thighs at the end of the day in these here parts. Thats some good livin' there.

Sorry about no new post. I'll try to post something else asap.

how's NY weather?

the farmer said...

Temps haven't been bad. Not too hot or cold but has been wet. Too wet in some cases. Corn fields planted late for instance. Some flash flooding and roads washed out last night. And people with horses, cows goats, etc are worried because its been too wet to cut and bale hay so there's a shortage of food for the animals. But its been pretty good for most of the veggie and flower garden plants - so far.

pansypoo said...

the corn on the way to spring green was very high. but wet here too. the WI river looked so high. plus streams. and it's been cool.
