best to plant em in the fall (sept, oct, nov) Simply broadcast them by hand. Don't need to cover them or prepare the soil or anything. Just drop em around where you want them to be the following spring. Then, after they bloom in the spring leave em be until the seeds mature (turn black). They'll reseed themselves or you can collect the seeds and spread em around in other places later in the fall for the following spring. And so on. They can be invasive so make sure you put em where you want em or you'll have to pull them before they seed. They're easy to pull up.
3 more pics of what they'll do if you let em spread around or broadcast them around yourself. These are in the woods and along the edge of the woods and i just let them do their own thing each year. (click pics for full size image).
But i like to put them in annual beds in the fall because they strangle weeds out in the spring. They also look good with daffodils planted among them. By the time the summer annulas are ready to be planted the FMNots have gone to seed and i can collect the seed (to be rebroadcast in fall) and pull out the plants to plant the annulas. And on and on it goes.
wow, i have never seen them like that. much prettier than stupid blue bonnets. but then, i an drawn more to lush green. so, they are like lavender. i gotta try them in the back '40'. just planted some lily of the valley. and transplanted a elm that came up in the primrose patch.
or a squirrel dropped it off along the way... and even if it doesn't escape the inevitable ya might be able to harvest morels under it after it dies 15-20 years from now.
well, not that woody back there. we've had stinky shrooms. the cedars were killed. the elm was planted in bad spot an is growing from under a decorative railroad tie under the walkway. roots must be going n interesting areas. it's future has been threatened. : ( so the baby elm i put near it. the other self planted elm is looking very good. maples planted themselves too. it 10 yrs it will be a pretty grove. a 15' by 5' grove.
Cottonwood snow season is over; now we're enjoying maple seeds helicoptering earthward.
Gotta invent a cover for auto cabin air intakes.
Front discs on the venerable Olds Ciera Saturday, and spent the remainder of the weekend learning how to walk again. Tires tomorrow ("that's getting to be an odd size tire these days").
And the lawn cries MARY! Or more like "hit the lawn & garden center! Daddy Deere and his illegitimate son Sabre needs's a new pair of EVERYTHING!"
Baby goat kids arrived last weekend. Twin bucks; not the best when you're in a dairy goat 4-H project, but both seem healthy and mom's got a whole new kick (anything that gets too close) ass attitude.
2 more blessed events to go; Bucks 3, Does 1 at this point. And she KNOWS she's the Purebred Princess, too.
"and if there's one thing that she don't need, it's another male goat to feed, ...In the Meadow (in the meadow!)"
I like it when the old leaves and decomposed skeletal remains of dead rodents blow out the vents first thing in the spring. Reminds me summer is comin' round again.
Catching a light buzz before you begin those menial tasks around the house helps for some things, but dealing with what amounts to maid service just plain sucks.
It's hard to get a sense of accomplishment when it takes all day on the weekend to catch up with what you're aware of, and then get another days worth dumped on you.
I'm barely responsible enough to keep up with myself; throw dresser drawers that are better suited for DVD storage than clothing and become bases for a giant, teetering stack of clean stuff that eventually heads for the floor, and-
let's just say that the wash is a perpetual motion machine here. Makes me lust after the setup on 19 & Counting.

well, spread by air, not really planted. rabbit ate a elm bit that fell off the tree, i suppose that is how they really get planted, in a rabbit turd.

I'll have to get one of my children to show me how to do that.
And in return, maybe I can show them how to start doing their own laundry.
but doing laundry is FUN!
getting old sucks.
