As long as ya don't have so many around you begin using them for fieldstone-style construction.
Last weekend spent lethargically getting around to fixing (or at least investigating fixes for) all our broken-down mowers and grass catchers.
And plugging a brake line in the truck in case we want to limp it somewheres to get fixed before goat-haulin' season arrives. I think it got ran low enough that there's air in them there front lines as well.
I need 3 months off and a year's pay just to get caught up. Multiplied by 4 or 5 intervals.
would you be interested in a modern push mower? it is quite easy to push. but it doesn't get used much as the neighbor mows our lawn cause of dog poop, but down to one dog.....an old dog.....we might need it.
we sit on 3 acres, some of which is either taken up by the house, driveway and multiple big to small sheds.
I would view pushmowing as one of those "what don't kill ya makes ya stronger Hey Dere" jihads/vision quests/replacement jackass video fodder challenges I won't try on a bet right now.
And we're trying to get said homegrown to the ravenous beasties while the sun shines, and the planets are in such alignment that we have enough working lawn equiptment to git-'er-done.
A reasonable person would just wrap the back 60% of the lot in good sturdy fencing, and let them mow it. And buy end-of-season closeouts on power equiptment for the remaining "front 40".
Happy 4th, folks.
And for you really old folksticks, "if ya can't have a good 4th, then have a good fifth!"
I hope at least one of you knows what that refers to, in the pre-metric days.
but the good ones (self propelled, funny looking wide area mowers type for instance) are pretty expensive. Getting into even the ride on price range with some of the better ones. And if the grass gets to high even the high end self propelled regular looking suburban lawn push mowers will choke on the grass (especially if its a little wet and its set to mulch). I have a cheap self propelled toro piece of crap i use to cut edges and along stone walls and around trees and stuff and that thing goes into a cacking panic at the sight of a large dandelion. I can't imagine mowing 3 acres with it even if it is easy to push. I'm constantly flipping it over and scraping the crud out from underneath it. Its a horrible piece of junk but as long as i don't scare it it serves its purpose. And I had to get another ride on one for everything else because the old one wouldn't have made it through the spring. And I finally resolved my chainsaw issues too.
New Jersey state legislature becomes first in nation votes to ban hydrofracking.

[snip] In an unprecedented and pioneering move, New Jersey’s state legislature became the first in the nation to pass a bill to enforce a statewide ban on a controversial gas drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing or “fracking”. The bill passed the Senate 32-1 and the Assembly 58-11. ... "Earlier this month Food & Water Watch released a report entitled The Case for a Ban on Fracking. The report reveals how the natural gas industry’s use of water-intensive, toxic, unregulated practices for natural gas extraction are compromising public health and polluting water resources across the country." [/snip]
All it needs is the sig of that fat-assed gasshole of a governor to sign it.
And I hope that greasy bastard from albany andrew cuomo is paying attention.
Sorry to change the topic, but should Obama put medicare and social security "on in the table in the hope of maybe getting some paltry tax raise from the super rich? Jesus Christ!
what if he put it on the table and got the cap lifted? what if he put it on the table and when the Repubs reached for it he cut their hands off? what if...?
at this point all of this on the table talk is just rumor and speculation and excitable media narrative. someone floated this vague story just for that purpose.
I'm just tired seeing Obama seeking compromise, avoiding confrontation, and making concessions.
You do realize that the House of reps is controlled by the Republican party, right? And the Dems only hold a slim majority in the Senate. This ain't FDR who held huge majorities in both. Guantanamo is still open because congress refused to allocate funding for facilities in the US. By the way, as long as prisoners at Guantanamo are not being mistreated and are receiving fair legal representation what difference does it make whether they are being housed in Guantanamo or in some SuperMax facility in Indiana. Do ya think being locked down in a SuperMax facility in Indiana in February would be some kind of life-style improvement or something?
Yeah, CEOs are getting even bigger bonuses but there is also stuff like this:
FDIC approves final executive pay clawback rule Posted on July 7, 2011 The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (“FDIC”) has approved a final rule authorizing it to clawback any compensation senior executives and directors received within two years of the FDIC being appointed receiver, if the FDIC finds they were “substantially responsible” for the failed condition of a covered financial company. Of particular concern, the rule (implementing section 210(s) of the Dodd-Frank Act): http://www.gtleblog.com/2011/07/articles/legislation/fdic-approves-final-executive-pay-clawback-rule/
You do realize that 80% of the people want social security and medicare left alone, right? FDR would have listened to them, but I'm not so sure about Obama. In fact I'm afraid Obama is becoming his own worst enemy by seeking compromise, avioding confrontation, and making concessions with a group of heartless, right-wing nuts.
"Do ya think being locked down in a SuperMax facility in Indiana in February would be some kind of life-style improvement or something?" No, I wasn't thinking relocation, I was thinking prosecution or release.
You do realize that 80% of the people want social security and medicare left alone, right? FDR would have listened to them, but I'm not so sure about Obama.
I do realize that. But you are reacting to these latest rumors about social security and/or medicare without knowing what any of it really means, if anything. And FDR would have had wide majorities in both the House and Senate to make his listenings come true. Apparently this matter of reality still escapes you.
In fact I'm afraid Obama is becoming his own worst enemy by seeking compromise, avioding confrontation, and making concessions with a group of heartless, right-wing nuts.
Well, this is certainly the latest manifestation of the ongoing Manic-Progressive Doomsday Cult's media narrative. I'm not so sure there is much truth to it but you're certainly welcome to entertain whatever fad you like. Apparently what you are looking for is an uncompromising confrontational left-wing nut? Granted, you probably won't get that with Obama.
No, I wasn't thinking relocation, I was thinking prosecution or release.
"release" would obviously mean some kind of relocation but the 2011 Defense Authorization Bill (passed by Congress) prevents relocation or release to other countries or into the US. Which prevents them from being tried in federal courts in NY for instance. In March the Obama admin decided to go forward with military trials instead. What do you think Obama should do in this case? Should he disregard Congress? If you were president what would you do?
btw: this kind of exchange is why i don' "blog" anymore. Because I'm tired of the stupid bullshit. So its all devolved into partying and shopping and cheap animal acts for me.

Boehner abandons efforts to reach comprehensive debt-reduction deal Washington Post - Saturday, July 9, 8:41 PM
House Speaker John A. Boehner abandoned efforts Saturday night to reach a comprehensive debt-reduction deal worth more than $4 trillion in savings, telling President Obama that a midsize package was the only politically possible alternative to avoid a first-ever default on the nation’s mounting national debt.
Boehner (R-Ohio) told Obama — who is hosting a key meeting Sunday evening on the debt issue — that their efforts to “go big,” as the speaker says, were stymied by the toughest issues: taxes and entitlements. Democrats continued to insist on tax reforms that would not pass muster in the conservative-dominated House, and Republicans wanted cuts to programs such as Medicare and Social Security that Obama and Senate Democrats would oppose.
o needs to SHAME them for no tax hikes on the people who are NOT SHARING THE PAIN.
You think they are going to feel shamed? Why would they? They don't think they've done anything to be ashamed of. For instance: last week when Obama criticized the tax breaks for private jet owners did the people who are "not sharing the pain" fold over in shame because they get big tax breaks to buy private jets? No, they pointed to the general aviation manufacturers and machinists who howled that the WH would be depriving the stuggling industry of stimulus money (in the form of those tax breaks) which goes to keep thousands of workers in the aviation manufacturing industry employed in good paying jobs building private jets. Without those tax breaks the rich people wouldn't be able to buy new jets and thousands of good paying manufacturing jobs - union jobs! - would be subjected to layoffs... and so on and so on. Does that sound like shame to you? Private jet owners and buyers are "job creators"! Those tax breaks are just like stimulus money! Are you against stimulus money for good paying jobs?!!!!! Obama should be the one who is shamed for depriving the job creators of stimulus money needed to keep good paying union manufacturing jobs in America!
See how that little game works? And that's exactly what they did too. Cower in shame? Not so much.

meanwhile WI is supplying frakers w/ sand.
we have a L L bean mower. i miss the sounds.
Christie looks like he's been hydraulically infused with deep fryer grease.
If they outlaw fracking, he probably won't be able to get a colonic within state lines, due to mudslide concerns.
Maybe that's a line-item veto thing.
let's hope he chokes on a sammich.

Step one: leak bullshit or make bullshit statements publicly and track polling. Do that right up till the "end time".
Step 2; hope your eventual deal or lack thereof doesn't cost you your cushy government job.
disclaimer- good deal or bad, endless money can be spent on a smear campaign in order to get enough dumbasses to vote you out.

I know he got bin Laden, saved the auto industry, etc., but then again Guantanamo is still open, CEOs are getting even bigger bonuses, etc.
As it is, I can't see anyone else to take his place, but I expected more spine, more guts from him.
